eNews June 2018

Dear Parents, Carers

This eNews contains information on Road Safety, Wider Achievement, Summer Fayre, Visit from HMI and end of term arrangements.

Road Safety

As part of road safety measures, over the summer there will be raised crossings and other changes to the roadway on Bonaly Road and Bonaly Wester. These are detailed on the attached plans and letter. This was shared with children at a recent assembly. The children were told to use this new raised crossing when coming from the Bonaly Wester area. They were also reminded that the housing directly opposite the school was private, school parking not allowed there and this should not be used as a walking route to school – residents drive in this area at drop off times and the visibility onto Bonaly Road is extremely limited with the tall hedges. These crossings and measures have been put in place following discussion with the Parent Council, City of Edinburgh Council and local residents.

Wider Achievement

Last Friday we had our brass and strings instrumentalists putting on a wonderful concert. Mr Hodge and Miss Johnston do a super job in the music instruction of pupils.

In sport Bonaly have been competing successfully in national championships in Orienteering, the Edinburgh InterScholastics athletics and hot off the press, our basketball team winning the West Edinburgh League on Friday.

Summer Fayre

A very big thank you to all the volunteers and the fund raising team who organised a  highly successful Summer Fayre. As well as raising in excess of £3000 for school funds it was a great community event – your support of these events is much appreciated.

Visit from HMI

Two weeks ago we had a visit from an Inspection team from Education Scotland (HMI). The formal publication of the reports will not be till next session however of particular note in the feedback was the attainment and achievement of the children; the supportive parents and community; and the enthusiastic staff team who are taking forward improvements. Thank to those of you who volunteered to take part in discussion groups and for completing questionnaires as part of the school inspection.

End of term

The end of the school year is fast approaching. We have welcomed families and children who are joining P1 next session. Our P7s have enjoyed their transition days to their secondary schools.

Some practical arrangements for the end of term …

If your child has medication in school, please ensure this is collected by Friday

29th June. We are unable to give the medication directly to the children to take home, so please make appropriate arrangements or speak to the school office team.

Last Day

Just a reminder that the school finishes at twelve noon on the last day of term. We plan for the whole school to say goodbye to our Primary 7 children slightly differently this year, so if you normally collect your child and are able to come along at 11.50am, we would love to you be part of the celebration too.

Session 2018-19

To the children and families who are moving on to new schools next session I wish you all the very best for the future.

School opens for children on Wednesday 15th August. In the meantime I hope you and your families an enjoyable summer.

Best wishes,

Peter Gorrie
